Last updated 2 August 2026 · Applies to the Settl Android app (com.settl.app)
The short version. Settl has no accounts and no server of its own. Every group, member name, expense, and amount you enter stays on your phone and is never sent to us. What we do receive is limited to anonymous usage counts and crash diagnostics, used to keep the app working.
Settl is published by Meet Patel, an independent developer. For any question about this policy or your data, write to meetcpatel906@gmail.com.
Everything you create in Settl is written to your phone's local storage and nowhere else. This includes:
This information is never transmitted to us, to any server we run, or to any third party. It is not backed up to an account, because Settl has no accounts. It stays readable only by the app on your device.
Depending on your Android settings, this data may be included in your device's own backups to Google. That backup is governed by Google's privacy policy, not this one.
Settl uses PostHog, hosted on its European infrastructure, to understand which features people use. Events carry counts only — never names, expense titles, or amounts. The complete list of what the app sends is:
| Event | Information attached |
|---|---|
app_opened | None |
group_created | Number of members |
group_opened | Number of members, number of expenses |
expense_added | How many people it was split between, total members, whether it was split across everyone |
expense_deleted | Whether it was deleted from the activity view |
currency_changed | The currency code, e.g. USD |
settings_item_tapped | Which settings row was tapped |
Alongside these events, PostHog records a randomly generated identifier stored on your device, your device model, operating system version, app version, language, and time zone. Your IP address is used by PostHog to derive an approximate region and is not used by us to identify you. The random identifier is not linked to your name, email, or any account, because Settl never asks for those.
Settl uses Sentry to find out when the app breaks. When an error occurs, Sentry receives a technical report: the error and its stack trace, your device model, operating system version, and app version, plus a trail of recent in-app actions such as which screen you were on.
The Sentry integration is deliberately configured not to attach your IP address or any user identifier to these reports.
Sentry also records a masked visual reconstruction of the app around the time of an error, and for a small random sample of sessions. All text, images, and graphics are masked out before anything leaves your device, so the recording shows layout and interaction — not your group members, expenses, or amounts.
If you tap Report a Problem in Settings and submit the form, the message you write is sent to Sentry, together with your name and email address if you choose to fill those fields in. All three fields are optional and nothing is sent unless you submit the form yourself.
Settl checks for over-the-air updates through Expo Application Services. That check tells Expo which app and runtime version you are running, and necessarily reveals your IP address as any network request does. No information about your expenses is involved.
Settl is distributed through Google Play, and may show Play's built-in "rate this app" prompt. Google independently collects installation and crash statistics as the store operator, under Google's privacy policy.
Usage analytics and crash diagnostics are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping Settl working and deciding what to improve, and are limited to what is needed for that purpose. A problem report is processed on the basis of your consent, given by submitting it.
| Provider | Purpose | Policy |
|---|---|---|
| PostHog (EU) | Anonymous usage analytics | posthog.com/privacy |
| Sentry | Crash and performance diagnostics | sentry.io/privacy |
| Expo | App update delivery | expo.dev/privacy |
| Google Play | Distribution | policies.google.com/privacy |
These providers may process data outside your country. Where that involves transfers out of the European Economic Area, they rely on the safeguards described in their own policies linked above.
Data on your device is kept until you delete it in the app, clear the app's storage, or uninstall Settl. Analytics events and crash reports are retained by our providers under their standard retention periods, after which they are deleted automatically.
Because Settl holds your expense data locally and identifies you to no one, the most direct control is in your hands: deleting a group removes it, and uninstalling the app or clearing its storage removes everything at once. Note that uninstalling deletes your data permanently, since there is no cloud copy to restore from.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or object to the processing of information relating to you, and to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. Because analytics and crash data are tied only to a random identifier and not to any account, we may need your help to locate the relevant records. Write to meetcpatel906@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days.
Settl is a general-purpose tool for splitting shared costs. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has provided information through a problem report, contact us and we will delete it.
Your expense data never travels over the network, which removes the largest category of risk. Data sent to our providers is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, but Settl deliberately holds as little as possible.
If this policy changes, the revised version will be published at this address with an updated date at the top. Material changes affecting how information is handled will also be noted in the app's release notes on Google Play.
